Culver City Police Department Recognizes Safer Internet Day
Published on February 10, 2026
In recognition of Safer Internet Day, the Culver City Police Department (CCPD) joins communities around the world in promoting the safe, responsible, and positive use of technology — especially among children and teens.
As our lives become increasingly connected, the internet offers powerful opportunities for education, creativity, and communication. However, it also presents real risks, including online exploitation, cyberbullying, identity theft, scams, and exposure to harmful content. Safer Internet Day serves as a reminder that digital safety is a shared responsibility among parents, educators, law enforcement, community leaders, and young people themselves.
Protecting Our Community Online
CCPD remains committed to safeguarding residents both offline and online. Our officers regularly investigate cyber-related crimes and work closely with regional and federal partners to address online threats affecting our community. Just as we encourage traffic safety on our roadways, we encourage digital safety in online spaces.
Tips for Parents & Caregivers
• Start the conversation early. Talk with children about appropriate online behavior and digital boundaries.
• Know the platforms. Understand the apps and social media platforms your children use.
• Set privacy controls. Review account settings to limit who can view or contact your child.
• Monitor without spying. Maintain open communication and encourage children to report anything that makes them uncomfortable.
• Model responsible behavior. Demonstrate positive digital habits and respectful online communication.
Tips for Teens & Youth
• Think before you post. Digital footprints are permanent.
• Never share personal information (address, school, passwords, location).
• Be cautious of online-only “friends.”
• Report cyberbullying, threats, or suspicious behavior to a trusted adult.
• Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
Recognizing Online Scams
Residents of all ages should remain alert to online scams involving fake delivery notices, phishing emails, social media marketplace fraud, and cryptocurrency or investment schemes. If something feels urgent, threatening, or “too good to be true,” pause and verify before responding.
Reporting Concerns
If you or your child experience online exploitation, harassment, or fraud, report it immediately.
• Emergencies: Call 9-1-1
• Non-Emergency CCPD: (310) 837-1221
• Report suspected child exploitation: NCMEC CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org
Safer Internet Day is more than a single day of awareness; it is a commitment to building a safer digital community year-round. By staying informed, maintaining open communication, and working together, we can help ensure that technology remains a tool for connection and opportunity, not harm. The Culver City Police Department encourages all residents to take time today to have a conversation about online safety and to continue learning about how to protect themselves and their families in the digital world.
